Tell us a little bit about yourself (who are you and what do you do!)...
Hello dear reader! I’m Will – I’m an audio designer here at Criterion. I’m on my second stint, having been an audio intern for a year whilst at university; I just had too damn good a time in my internship that I had to come back! And so back I came, excited to help bring the worlds & experiences we create at Criterion to life through sound. Outside of work you’re likely to find me in one of a few places - a gig venue (when it’s possible again, please be soon); writing/playing/performing music (probably in some dingy basement but preferably in a studio); in my kitchen (cooking up something goooood); shouting myself hoarse at a Portsmouth football game (I’m still not really sure how this one became such a thing); at a funk soul disco (an obsession that developed at uni, never stop boogieing); or, finally at peace, recording some nature & birds in some far flung field in the countryside.
What does your role entail?
We’re fortunate in the audio team to be able to work on a huge variety of features on a given project; anything from creating lush world ambiences & atmospheres for our levels, to music editing, to UI sounds for menus and foley for characters. If something needs a sound, we’ll make it!
Your favourite game of all time?
I’m not sure favourite would be quite the right word, and there’s probably some recency bias involved, but The Last of Us 2 might be the most impactful experience I’ve ever had in a game. Microcosmic case in point; I’ve never seen such an accurate and powerful portrayal of vertigo & panic attacks as the skybridge scene (if you know, you know I reckon). It truly took me weeks to get over that bloody game. And now I have a morbid curiosity to play it again!!
