Tell us a little bit about yourself (who are you and what do you do!)
Hi! I’m the Character Art Director at Criterion. I have a background as a CG generalist, I previously worked in advertising and architectural visualization - very different sectors but the thread of continuity is digital art… I love making digital art and playing games so I’m very much at home at Criterion. I’ve been lucky enough to have worked on 6 published NFS titles in various roles ranging from Motion Graphics, VFX and Cinematics Direction. I love the challenge of doing something new, it keeps things interesting by stretching me to apply my skills to different creative problems.
What does your role entail?
My role requires me work with many talented people and wear a few different caps, initially it’s all about creating a really compelling vision which people can get excited about, it needs to be easy to articulate what we are doing and why: The benefit, this is traditionally a presentation deck with key concept art, reference and research. Once we have an awesome vision we start to think about how we can deliver on the promise of that vision, this is an R&D phase working with many other teams and building prototypes the aim of which to gain confidence and find risk. When we go into full production I’m reviewing content to make sure we’re getting the quality we want at every stage. Another aspect of this stage of production is working with the brand team on things I can’t disclose. 😉
Your favourite game of all time?
That’s such difficult question, I’ll give you my top 5 in no particular order:
The 1983 Star Wars arcade…What 3D…Wow! I was 8 and my brain was blown away!
Outrun…”Magical sound shower” is such an awesome track
Streetfighter 2…I’m not great at it but it’s so iconic and…deep!
God of War 2018…Cinematography is amazing
Destiny 2…I’m still playing it
