Angry Flaming Spaghetti Inspired by The Sims

Simspiration: Chef Matty Matheson lights up the kitchen

You may know Matty Matheson from his work in a recent hit culinary drama series – but when he’s not playing a Chicagoan handyman, the actor is in the kitchen, as a renowned chef and restaurateur.

We are excited for Matty’s take on the iconic Angry Flaming Spaghetti dish, as seen in The Sims. Based on the arrabbiata, this dish is absolutely fire - a player favorite that fits Matheson’s brand of home style cooking. There’s even an option to take it to the next level and turn up that heat (consumption may result in angry moodlets).

Angry Flaming Spaghetti by Matty Matheson (Inspired by The Sims)
Servings: 4 servings
Cook time: 25 min

Ingredients

For the Pasta and Sauce
¼ cup extra virgin olive oil
1 medium yellow onion, finely chopped
4 garlic cloves, minced
1 tablespoon peperoncino, or more to taste
1 (28 ounces) can crushed tomatoes
1 bay leaf
Kosher salt and ground black pepper, to taste
Sugar, to taste
1 pound spaghetti
Fresh basil leaves, for garnish

For the Flames
½ cup high-proof alcohol (Must be 21+ to flambé)

Directions

1.  Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and cover with a lid.

2.  In a large Dutch oven over medium heat, add olive oil, onions, and a hefty pinch of salt. Stir to combine and cook for 8-10 minutes, or until the onions are lightly browned around the edges.

3.  Add garlic and peperoncino and stir to combine. Cook for 1-2 minutes, or until fragrant.

4.  Add crushed tomatoes and bay leaf and stir to combine. Bring to a low simmer, then taste and season with salt, pepper, and sugar (if needed). Cover and simmer while the pasta cooks.

5.  Add the pasta to the boiling water and cook until al dente, then using tongs, transfer directly into the simmering sauce. Stir the pasta into the sauce and cook for 1-2 minutes, stirring constantly, until the sauce has absorbed into the noodles.

6.  Remove from the heat and divide equally into 2-4 bowls. Top with basil and serve immediately.

For Flambe Option (Must be 21+ to flambé)

7.  After the pasta has been plated, put it on top of a heat-proof surface. Add 2 tablespoons of liquor to a small ladle. Slowly pour a thin stream over the pasta, and use a long stick lighter to light the stream on fire. This will flambe the surface of the pasta. Allow the flames to fully extinguish before eating.
