Meet Our Summer Intern - Rocio

Meet Mobile Analyst Intern, Rocio, who went from Hispanic Scholarship Fund STEM Summit recruit to Next-Gen Talent Intern.

EA’s internship program provides great opportunities for students to start and grow their careers while cultivating their passions along the way. Our Next-Gen Talent team recruited Rocio at last year’s Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF) STEM Summit and was pleased that she joined us as part of this year’s first-ever remote #intEArn class. Learn how Rocio’s internship gave her the experience and confidence that she says will carry with her for the rest of her career.

Fast Facts:

  • Name: Rocio Jaime
  • Title: Mobile Analyst Intern
  • Field of Study: Computer Science
  • School: Smith College

Describe yourself and your background.

Hello! My name is Rocio and I am originally from Greenville, South Carolina. I have always had a deep interest in quantitative sciences and interned this past summer as a data analyst for Maxis.

What are you studying and why?

My official major is computer science however I also take courses in math, statistics, and data science. Since I was younger, I always had an interest in mathematics, and I chose computer science because it incorporates coding, theoretical mathematics, and the opportunity for me to apply the subjects I enjoy in a real-world context.

What drew you to EA?

Growing up I’ve been able to witness the manners in which video games foster community and creativity. I would play Plants vs. Zombies with my brother and watched the fun he had competing with his friends in EA SPORTS FIFA. When I learned that my skillset could open doors to the gaming industry, EA just felt like a great fit and a good way to start my career in video games.

How do you think this internship will help you on your career path?

The cool thing about interning for EA is that I was able to further develop my skills in programming and math, and create a network with many talented people who also share an interest in video games. This internship definitely gave me valuable experience and confidence that I will carry for the rest of my career.

What team are you working with? What projects are you working on for us?

I worked with the Maxis analytics team on The Sims 4 franchise. This summer I worked with two other interns to develop a language processing tool that gives us insights on player thoughts and sentiments provided in an in-game survey. This tool was also integrated into a data pipeline for future usage!

What makes EA a unique place to intern?

Something unique about EA is the culture I’ve observed around work and community. Most employees I’ve met are passionate about video games and enjoy working here, which results in an environment where everyone is motivated and excited about the work they do.

What was your reaction to EA’s call for a virtual internship following safety protocols for COVID-19? How have you leveraged some perks or benefits from this remote internship?

My initial reaction was disappointment, as I had been looking forward to a summer in the Bay Area since last Fall. However, like the rest of the interns, I adapted and was able to find many positives within the remote experience. First, we had multiple remote events/games where I was able to interact with other interns which was cool. EA even sponsored our meals for some of these events. I was also able to allocate money that I would have originally used for relocation on building a comfortable workspace at home. Of course, an in-person experience would have been amazing, but I am very grateful for how great the internship went this summer.

We acknowledge that you are interning during an international conversation on the systemic injustice, racism, and violence here in the United States. With that, it can be hard to bring yourself to work. What communities or conversations have you joined at EA to share your experiences or learn from others? Have you attended any events to further the conversation?

In June, EA had an entire day where employees held meetings and workshops to talk about systemic issues, especially in the workplace. I appreciated that EA dedicated time and took the initiative to help us to learn and grow together. I also attended events with the Somos EA Employee Resource Group, and it was a wonderful experience to talk to other Latinx members of the company and learn about their time at EA.

Tell us something we don’t know about you.

My joy for languages doesn’t stop at programming! I am fluent in English and Spanish and have taken Korean classes. This year I am learning Chinese and it has been a blast so far.

We look forward to meeting more talented prospective interns at this year’s virtual HSF STEM Summit. Learn more about our Next-Gen Talent program and apply to be a part of our next intern class.
