Creating Cal’s Favorite Song in Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order™

Ancient religion, spiritual mysticism, and powerful melodies. Together, these three visionary pillars make up one incredibly powerful form of cultural artistry: Mongolian heavy metal music! Or Star Wars. That, too. Though in this case, both!

When developing Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, the teams at Respawn Entertainment, EA and Lucasfilm wanted to flesh out the galaxy they were exploring, and part of that included music. In this case, we aren’t talking about the iconic scores made by Gordy Haab and Stephen Barton for Jedi: Fallen Order that play when you uncover a sprawling vista or engage in a climactic fight. We’re talking about music that the denizens of the galaxy listen to on their commutes or while working, including our very own Cal Kestis!

For that, the team scoured the globe for the perfect sound, leading them to discovering The Hu, a rock group that merges traditional Mongolian throat singing and heavy metal rock in a way that is exceptionally unique to their creative stylings.

Trying to recall how it goes? Listen no further than the official music video for Sugaan Essena by The Hu!

(Mild spoilers to follow!)

Cal’s journey starts off with him listening to this song while he scraps the husks of old warships on Bracca, only for it to pump him up later in the story when he enters a gladiator arena to face off against all manner of creatures and foes. Perhaps it’s just Cal’s natural musical affinity, but catching his lightsaber in time to the pounding of the drums is a surefire way to get anyone ready for a fight.

Making this piece wasn’t a regular process, though. For those who aren’t familiar with Mongolian, that’s not the language being spoken in the official version used for Jedi: Fallen Order. The entire piece was translated from Mongolian into a language unique to Star Wars to help flesh out the galaxy.

Curious to learn more about what it was like for the Jedi: Fallen Order team and The Hu to collaborate on the making of Sugaan Essena? We’ve got you covered! Be sure to watch the behind the scenes video for the making of this track.

From music to combat to spectacle to story, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order provides a brand-new experience for Star Wars fans and players. Take up your lightsaber as Cal Kestis (and fight to the beat of this awesome song!) on your Jedi journey.
