The Cypher’s Kiss: A Choice Based Short Story

By Cathleen Rootsaert

MOVE ON

The next day breaks warm and sunny, a sign that Icetide is over. You turn to Ammien and tell them that you can't be together. You say that you have no love left for them. It’s a lie. A lie of kindness. Gently, you guide them to the door. "I'm sorry," you say. "But you'll be all right."

Ammien's face turns cold, and their eyes flood with hatred. Without another word, they leave.

Like last time, you watch Ammien from across the courtyard while they laugh and flirt and drink and dance. Although, it’s different this time; you have to look away. It seems desperate this time — a wild performance — almost as if it's meant as punishment for rejection.

Ammien's spiral continues in full view of the Enclave and, although many try to help, soon Ammien is lashing out in anger at anyone who seems to care

Some months later, you're called to the jail. Ammien had been arrested. Madame Chronicler and Yarrow are there.

"Something has to be done for this poor broken soul," Madame Chronicler says. "You're the one they trust."

"I ask you, take them under your wing again, help them," said Yarrow.

Unwelcome comes the breathless squeeze of longing and pain to grab at your heart.

You walk down the stairs into the dim jail. Ammien stands at the bars, head bowed, holding out their hand.

Gently, you take it.

"You're going to be all right, my friend. I promise."
