    • This is one of those peak Gronk moments that the Gronk truthers will point to, making the argument he’s the most dominant tight end of all time. I won’t get into that, but rather just appreciate this unreal item. Insane catching attributes plus an 89 run blocking rating? Come on.  
• Offensive Hero: Jimmy Smith (Jaguars WR - 94 OVR)
  • 11/21/1999 | Saints vs Jaguars | Final Score: 23-41 | Stats: 220 receiving yards, 1 touchdown.
    • One of the most underrated receivers of the 1990’s, Smith tallied more than 1,000 yards in nine seasons, he never finished with fewer than 1,000 yards when he played at least 14 games. We get some solid speed (93) and deep route running (94) here. 
• Defensive Hero: Jason Taylor (Dolphins RE - 94 OVR)
  • 11/19/2006 | Vikings vs Dolphins | Final Score: 20-24 | Stats: 5 tackles, 1 sack, 2 PD, 1 INT, 2 FF.
    • Taylor was one of the most dominant pass rushers in the game when I was growing into the football fan I am today, and I remember him as a beast in older Maddens. There’s something about #99 that gives someone a certain type of swagger. This item is immediately one of the best pass rushers in the game.

Legends Reveal

Roger Craig (HB) - 95 OVR

I’ll admit it, I had to look up Roger Craig when hearing he was a legend. I knew his name, but he finished his career a few years before I was even born. Looking at his stats, however, it was apparent he was a workhorse running back whose skill set could stand the test of time. The man was more than 220 pounds and once notched 92 receptions in a season. That type of versatility is ridiculous! 

Craig tallied 13,100 all-purpose yards and 73 touchdowns in 11 NFL seasons. He’s a three-time Super Bowl champion with the 49ers and a four-time Pro Bowler. 

This item does his insane skill set justice, it comes in with a 94 speed, 89 trucking, 95 break tackle and 87 catching. This Craig item, as a 95 OVR should, can be used extremely effectively in all facets of the game: short-yardage, passing downs and early downs. 

Luke Kuechly (MLB) - 95 OVR

Theme Teams: Panthers

“Juxtaposition,” noun; the fact of two things being seen or placed close together with contrasting effect. How about some perfectly-juxtaposed legends this week? Craig, an elusive, powerful, complete running back and Kuechly, a formidable, hard-hitting middle linebacker are an electric combination this week. 

Kuechly, a seven-time Pro Bowler who played eight NFL seasons, was an unrelenting force in the middle of the field. There were times when it felt as though Carolina could put any 10 men on their defense, and as long as Kuechly was the Mike, they would be fine. Pro Football Focus ranked Kuechly as one of the four most-valuable linebackers in the NFL since 2006. 

This Kuechly item is as close to unstoppable as MLBs get in Madden. He comes in with a blazing 93 speed, bone-crushing 95 hit power and elite 93 awareness and play recognition. With a 91 block shedding and 92 zone coverage, I don’t want to put the ball anywhere near #59. That will be tough though, with his playing in the middle of the field.

TJ’s Top Five*: Bo Knows Legends

*Since there are only four “Bo Knows” items right now, here they are ranked! 

4) Dan Dierdorf (94 OVR - RT)

If you’ve seen these top fives before, you know I don’t have anything against ranking lineman up top. I actually think I’m more likely to value good lineman in MUT! This Dierdorf item is great, but the least valuable of the four in my opinion. The blocking ratings are fantastic, but there is a host of capable lineman and this Dierdorf item doesn’t rise above a loaded elite class. 

3) Charle Young (94 OVR - TE) 

With a 91 speed, this Young item absolutely moves the needle. Fast tight ends are a mismatch waiting to happen, and at six-foot-four, Young is a weapon in the receiving game. His blocking attributes are solid, but not high enough to make him top-two on this list for me. A great card nonetheless, a fantastic tribute to an NFL legend of 16 seasons.

2) Bruce Smith (94 OVR - LE) 

Another great pass rusher is always a good thing. This Smith item is elite in all realms of everything defensive line. For starters, the 90 speed 92 strength combo is lethal. Mix in the 92 block shedding and you can play Smith anywhere on the defensive line and he’ll wreak havoc. I mean, across the board, this item has elite attributes. What’s there to even be desired, an 82 agility? Let me know when you throw Smith in there to run a halfback sweep and we can talk about agility. 

1) Everson Walls (94 OVR - CB)

A fantastic last name, and applicable at that, because a wall is what Walls will build in front of receivers. You know I love fast and tall cornerbacks and Walls fits the bill. His 93 speed can keep pace with anyone in the game and at 6’1 with a 94 jumping he can defend just about anyone in the game, too. His coverage stats are: 92 zone coverage, 93 man coverage and 94 press coverage. Is there a cornerback in the game you’d rather not see your WR1 matched up against? This item is a total W and the Cowboys, Giants and Browns theme teams are in for a treat.
