Following an incredible run in the eMLS Cup earlier this year, which secured his spot in the upcoming FC Pro World Championship, New England Revolution’s Jafonso has been diligently training to stay sharp for the tournament.
“There have been a few changes in the game since I won the eMLS Cup. I’ve been practicing a lot and haven’t really stopped since the end of the eMLS season. Continuing to train after the competition was crucial to maintaining my level,” he explained.
Although focused on achieving more success in the FC Pro World Championship, the Portuguese FC player knows he wouldn’t be here without his victory in Austin, Texas.
“Winning the eMLS Cup has been the biggest achievement of my career so far. It gave me the chance to compete in my first World Championship. Securing a victory in a major league like the eMLS is great.
While Jafonso’s journey may seem smooth, there were significant changes before his eMLS Cup run. Moving from Portugal to compete in the United States was a big risk, but one he was eager to take.
“Going to the States was a really exciting moment. My team, which is owned by Diogo Jota, talked to me about this opportunity. As soon as they mentioned it, I knew I wanted to leave Portugal, try other leagues, and have new experiences. Fortunately, things worked out really well for me.”
Despite facing elite opponents within his group, Jafonso believes that staying focused on himself and his training will help him advance to the next stage.
“I wasn’t hugely surprised by my group, as there are many amazing players competing. All the groups will be tough, so I expected to face strong competition.
“I know I'm arguably the favorite to win the competition in my group along with PHzin. However, this is a competition, and everyone has a chance. I’m just focusing on being at my best so I can perform well.”
