Securing qualification is always a huge moment, but for de Weerd, Match Week 8 felt different — especially when reflecting on it afterwards.

“Obviously, it’s a great feeling. As a competitor, you always want to play at every tournament and perform well,” he said. “To be honest, it was probably even more intense as a viewer. During the matches, I just focused on my own games, which were already intense, but I didn’t really look at the table. Watching it all unfold later made me realise how tight it was.”

With so much at stake, keeping his focus on his own performance proved to be the right approach. The recent gameplay patch has impacted the competitive scene, with defensive changes leading to more high-scoring games. De Weerd acknowledged how this shift made mentality even more crucial.

“The patch has changed the defending most, probably. We’ve seen more goals flying in than usual, so it’s even more important now to have a strong mentality. I think that’s what made the difference for me.”

As he prepares for his second consecutive FC Pro Open Finals, De Weerd remains fully focused on delivering his best performance.

“Fans can expect that I’m definitely giving it my all, as always.”
