Le Mans Spotlight: Ford Performance
Famous for bringing American muscle to the competitive European stage, the Ford GT Le Mans is coming soon to Real Racing 3!
Ford wasn’t always a name associated with endurance racing. For the first half of the 1960s, Ferrari ruled the track when it came to Le Mans. Their team was the definitive leader, and a seemingly unbeatable opponent. But Henry Ford II had other ideas. As part of a mission to dominate endurance racing, he and his team developed the Ford GT40, which first materialized in 1964. It debuted at Le Mans that same year, but unfortunately was not able to finish the race then, or in 1965. But after many months of repairs and upgrades, and a team led by the legendary Carroll Shelby, the Ford GT40 was due for its own checkered flag. In 1966, Team Shelby-American finished first with subsequent wins in ’67, ’68, and ’69. The multiple year-spanning victories broke Ferrari's hold on the race, and created one of motorsport's most exciting grudges.
Since the 1969 victory, however, Ford left endurance racing altogether, and has remained dormant -- until now. First announced at the 2015 24 Hours of Le Mans, 2016 marks Ford’s return to the coveted race after a 47-year absence. Four Ford cars will be featured from both the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and the FIA World Endurance Championship - two teams competing from Ford Chip Ganassi Team UK, and two teams from Ford Chip Ganassi Team USA. They will be fielding the cars #66 through #69.
The #67 Ford Chip Ganassi Team UK is currently 2nd in the FIA Endurance Trophy for LMGTE Pro Teams 2016. The #67 Ford Chip Ganassi Racing USA currently sits 3rdin the IMSA WTSC GT Le Mans Team 2016. It’s been an exciting season already, and sure to be even more exciting as Ford eyes off their Le Mans comeback.
The Ford GT Le Mans is just one of five new cars available in this update, including the Ferrari 488 GTE, and the Corvette C7.R.
