Reigning UFC Flyweight champ Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson has pulled off some of the most spectacular finishes in the history of the sport on his way to breaking company records. To kick-off a summer schedule headlined by the stars of the sport, EA SPORTS UFC 3 is proud to announce the Icon Edition, with Demetrious Johnson on the limited edition's cover.
Featuring a number of fresh gameplay additions, this limited-time release is available July 3 to 17 for Xbox One and PS4. A digital exclusive, this is the best way to enjoy a summer full of great fights.
Before his fight on August 4 at UFC 227, let's take a closer look at how Mighty Mouse made his way to the Icon Edition Cover.
Mighty Mouse Roars in the Octagon
The debate over who the world's best mixed martial artist is rages on in a time when athletes are becoming stronger, wiser, and more dangerous. With multiple weight classes and numerous champions, it's difficult to compare the achievements of fighters when each division presents a unique level of difficulty. If you take a look at the UFC's pound-for-pound rankings, a list dedicated to this exact topic, you might expect to see the likes of Conor McGregor or Georges St-Pierre atop the list. While there are many fighters that deserve this consideration, it is in fact Johnson who holds the top spot, thanks in large part to his incredible accomplishments.
As the only 125-pound champion in the history of the company, Johnson has defended his belt a record 11 times, often defeating his opponents in spectacular fashion. The pound-for-pound king is suitably one of the best playable fighters in UFC 3, with 94 striking, 93 grappling, 96 stamina, and 91 health. He truly is king of the canvas.
The move Mighty Mouse used to secure his 11th defense was something the world had never seen before. Picking up his opponent Ray Borg with the intention of tossing him to the ground with a suplex, Mighty Mouse transitioned to an armbar submission in mid-air before Borg could even hit the ground. The maneuver was so fast and so unlike anything that came before it, Borg simply had no chance to react to what was unfolding at his expense. The armbar was locked in by the time both men hit the canvas as Johnson locked in his record-setting title defense in jaw-dropping fashion.
A Fighter and a Gamer
An avid gamer, Demetrious is not only known for enjoying games, but the winningest champ in UFC history also streams his gameplay on Twitch. His 152,000 Twitch followers and 48,000 YouTube subscribers are an indication of just how strong the champ's presence really is in the gaming community, and just one more reason Mighty Mouse is the perfect Icon Edition Cover Athlete. If you want Demetrious Johnson on the digital cover of UFC 3, you'll have to act fast, as the Icon Edition is only available from July 3 to 17. For those who already own UFC 3, the complimentary Icon Update will be available as of July 3, including many of the same features.
