5 Questions with Alex Scott

We sat down with EA SPORTS FC commentator & former professional footballer Alex Scott to talk women in sports and gaming

March 12, 2025

Over the years, our EA SPORTS FC franchise has taken significant strides to ensure men and women athletes are equally and authentically represented in our games. This includes our release of EA SPORTS FC™ 25 last fall, where we introduced five of the top women’s leagues to Career Mode for the first time – bringing us to game mode parity between men’s and women’s football.

That’s why this Women's History Month, we were excited to hear from some incredible athletes on what it means to be a woman in football, as well as sit down with Alex Scott – former professional football player and EA SPORTS FC’s first English-speaking woman commentator – to discuss the importance of EA SPORTS’ commitment to foster an inclusive environment for all in football, what it means for her to be featured in EA SPORTS FC, how we can all embody the International Women’s Day theme of ‘Accelerate Action,’ and much more.

Read the full story below, and check out EA SPORTS FC’s International Women’s Day Campaign as we celebrate women in sports and gaming – this month and beyond.

1. What message would you share with the next generation of aspiring women and girls in sports?

For me, I think the message is, don't let anyone put their limitations on you.

Some people are fearful when you want to chase your dreams and achieve what you want to achieve. But remember to go out there and show them.

Also, never stop believing in yourself. Don't wait for other people's approval, or for them to believe in you first. Always remember why you're passionate about something and why you started it – and carry on doing it.

2. From your perspective, why is EA SPORTS’ commitment to fostering an inclusive environment, including women in football, important?

Oh, it's been a game changer. Just in terms of the narrative that we've always been trying to change. Telling people that sport is for everyone – that football is for everyone. And [the inclusion of women in the game] basically does that. It helps normalize the conversation. I love it.

I always go to the early FA Cup rounds. And, literally, the men and the young boys in the stadium are like, “Oh my gosh, you're the one from the game.” And they're talking to me on a level like ‘this is normal.’

So that's what it continues to do, it breaks that, I suppose, old generational cycle that's been there – the idea that ‘football's just for men, football's just for boys.’ Because [women] are amongst it, we're part of it, and it's normalized.

3. How do you feel to be the first English speaking woman to be featured as a commentator in our EA SPORTS FC franchise?

[Alex smiling] I think the smile says it all!

I don't think it hit me until afterwards, and this is like a lot of stuff in my career because I'm always just keeping it humble – what can I do next, what can I break into next, next, next… and it's not until I saw the articles, had the people coming up to me, kind of those game changing moments as everyone saw it. That's when it hit me that this is such a huge moment. And it sunk in how proud I am. Not about me being part of this game changing moment, but actually knowing that it was going to move things forward.

So it's still a proud moment, and will never get lost on me. I’m honoured to still be here and amongst it all.

4. What is the one thing that we can all do to model this year's International Women's Day global theme of ‘Accelerate Action’?

I’d say firstly, tell a friend, to tell a friend to be part of the conversation and use your voice.

But, even bigger than that, to the dads out there with young daughters who aspire to be on a football team or play sports when they grow up: you don’t want her to grow up in a world where she’s constantly fighting against society every single day. Start using your voice and making a change so your daughter doesn't have to. Understanding what that will do is so important. It changed my life.

5. Who or what inspires you to show up as the best that you can in your field?

To be honest, I think it's myself. I always want to be a better version of myself every single day.

When I was a footballer, it was always about being the best I could be in my position, or for [my team,] Arsenal, or for my country. And it was the same when transitioning into TV.

It wasn't me ever sitting alongside someone being like, ‘Well, I'm going to be a better presenter or pundit than you.’ It was actually, ‘I want to show up. I wanna do this job to the best of my ability and be the best I can be.’ Because I know that when I'm sitting in that chair, I’m helping change a conversation and the norm.

So, it's always about putting pressure on myself, and I'll continue to be like that. Asking myself, ‘How can I show up and be better than I was yesterday?’ and keep climbing and aspiring to do more.
