What more could be said about Cristiano Ronaldo after he led Portugal to next summer’s FIFA World Cup in Brazil. Ronaldo scored all four goals in their 4:2 two-legged contest versus Sweden, scoring the lone goal in Lisbon on Friday and then proceeding to score a hat trick in Solna four days later. Teammate João Moutinho also proved important over the two matches, assisting on two of Ronaldo’s four goals.
Mamadou Sakho’s rebound goal in the 22nd minute on Tuesday night began the comeback that saw France erase a two-goal deficit and book their tickets to Brazil by defeating the Ukraine 3:0. Although primarily a defender, it was Sakho’s pressure in the Ukraine penalty area that caused headaches. It was also a factor in the own-goal scored in the 72nd minute that would give France the 3:2 aggregate victory.
