Inside the Studio: DICE LA

Take a tour around the facility

In 2013, General Manager Fredrik Loving brought the DICE magic to the sunny beaches of Playa Vista, California in the form of DICE LA. The studio, best known for its award-winning work for the Battlefield franchise, was placed right in the center of LA’s Silicon Beach.

An area that is known for its fusion of tech and entertainment, Silicon Beach has proven to be the perfect staging ground for DICE LA to take root.

The minute you step off the elevator, you’ll see a mural of the classic Los Angeles sunset. If you look closely, you might be able to see familiar DICE imagery hidden within it.

In the lobby, a life-size sculpture of a Battlefield character stands as sentinel. Created by Daniels Wood Land, who can be seen on Animal Planet's "Redwood Kings," the soldier holds the Rorsch MK-1 rail gun created by DICE LA for the Battlefield 4 Final Stand DLC.

Also in the lobby, you’re greeted with a regularly updating graffiti wall. Local LA artists are invited every few months to put their mark on the wall as a way to constantly remind the studio of the art and culture that surround them. This time around the work of Greg 'Craola' Simkins is featured.

On an employee’s first day at DICE LA they have their silhouette captured. The silhouettes are all mounted side by side in the main hallway of the studio, a nod to the studio’s flat hierarchy and shared mentality that every member of the team is an important gamemaker.

As part of the DICE LA philosophy of providing an open and transparent environment, the studio runs bi-weekly meetings where all staff members can share updates and developments. Everyone is encouraged to participate, from industry veterans to newbies alike. It’s the studio’s dogma: that a supportive environment allows their developers to make the best games they can.

The food isn’t so bad either.

The fastest way to a developer’s heart is through their stomach. Couple that with DICE LA’s newly overhauled kitchen, and you have a recipe for happy and nourished gamemakers.

DICE LA is a studio built for collaboration. Teams across disciplines work closely together to tangle with problems and collaborate, making our projects better one brushstroke at a time.

The office is an open floor-plan and includes plenty of spaces for collaboration, team meetings, or just getting caught up on the work and life of your fellow developers.

DICE LA’s development teams have artists, sound designers, animators, engineers, producers and more coming together to create the most immersive game experience they can.

The studio fully embraces EA’s players first philosophy, even creating a first-of-its-kind program called the Community Test Environment, which brings players in to test game code sooner and in more depth than ever before. DICE LA team members interface directly with fellow gamers, feeding the intel right back into the game development team.

When employees need time away from their screens, there’s space to relax and decompress with games like pool and ping pong.

There’s even a pool and volleyball court to relax and enjoy a little office competition!

At the end of the day, DICE LA is a studio of gamers taking a fresh approach to making great games and new experiences for its players. With big projects on the horizon, the studio is growing and evolving – adding new talent each day.
