2023: A Year Powered by Interactive Entertainment

Reflecting on the games that engaged and inspired our global player communities this year.

As 2023 wraps up, we reflect on an exciting year powered by interactive entertainment. 2023: Year in Gaming highlights the ways games continue to evolve beyond the bounds of play. As the definition of games continues to expand, we remain focused on building games and experiences that entertain massive online communities, creating blockbuster interactive storytelling, and amplifying the power of community in and around our games with social and creator tools.

In the past year, we witnessed even more people around the world choosing games as a way to come together, express their creativity, share their fandom, and build community. Whether it was joining the club in EA SPORTS FC™ 24, living out their equestrian dreams in The Sims™ 4, squadding up with Post Malone to unleash beautiful mayhem in Apex Legends™, or facing their biggest fears in Season 6: Dark Creations from Battlefield™ 2042 – we thank our talented teams and global community of players for helping us lead the future of entertainment, and inspire the world to play.

In 2023, The Sims™ 4 became the most widely played game in the 23-year history of the franchise. Madden NFL continued to welcome more football fans into the game as Madden NFL 24 drew more players during week one of launch compared to its previous release. The team at Respawn Entertainment launched the next chapter in Cal Kestis’ story, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. Last but not least, championing a new culture of play, EA’s Most Popular Franchise of the Year and Most Popular Mobile Franchise of the Year was EA SPORTS FC™.

You can check out all the details below to see how the global player communities of Electronic Arts’ most popular games spent their time this year.

2023 Methodology

Our Most Popular EA Franchise of the Year (not including Mobile franchises) was determined on the basis of total unique active players, average weekly active users, and average monthly active users. Our Most Popular EA Mobile Franchise of the Year was determined on the basis of average daily active users. For each designation, we considered engagement metrics for all active titles in the franchise (for EA SPORTS FC, all active titles in our global football franchise) from January 1, 2023 - October 24, 2023.

Metrics shown on the EA SPORTS FC slide are based on data generated from EA SPORTS™ FIFA 23 data from 1/1/2023-9/20/2023 and data generated from EA SPORTS FC™ 24 data from 9/21/2023-10/24/2023. Metrics shown on EA SPORTS FC Mobile slide are based on data generated from EA SPORTS FIFA Mobile from 1/1/2023-9/25/2023 and data generated from EA SPORTS FC™ Mobile data from 9/26/2023-10/24/2023. EA SPORTS™ Madden NFL 23 data was generated from 1/1/2023-8/14/2023 and combined with EA SPORTS™ Madden NFL 24 data generated from 8/15/2023-10/24/2023. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor data was generated from 4/28/2023-10/24/2023. All other game data was generated from January 1, 2023 - October 24, 2023.
