Matt Cuttle and Darren Cross from Match Magazine take a look at the art of defending.

Use both contain and secondary contain to prevent dangerous attacks and hold up play. Make sure to use the A button sparingly when containing to make sure players do not get pulled out of position and lose their shape. It is wise to also avoid containing with your centre backs as this will leave large gaps in your defence for your opponent to exploit. Secondary contain is effective as it cuts down options for attackers. Rather than having two players rush an attacker, apply pressure with your containing player by holding RB and use the selected player to cover the channels or a passing option.

Do not be afraid to play around with a custom quick tactics to experiment and see what works for you. If you are struggling to keep up with your opponents attack, the option to apply a tactic focusing on higher pressure in defence, for example, can be a game-changer. There is always the option to get between an attacker and ball by holding LT. This will allow your player to shield the ball, meaning they will attempt to cut in between an attacker and halt a run.

Defend crosses and corners by holding the shoot button. This is as effective as holding the X button but allows you to get a lot more power behind the header, preventing it from dropping nicely to an attacker on the edge of the area. If trying to keep up with a fast player, press B to pull and hold and increase your chances of keeping up. However, like contain, use sparingly to avoid giving away a penalty or free-kick in a dangerous area.

Join Matt and Darren next time for tips on how to defend corners in FIFA 14.
