The 2010 World Cup champions came up short in 2014, but can they make a return to the top or has the ship sailed for this generation of Spaniards?
Spain's so-called “golden generation” did some pretty amazing things; not only did they win the World Cup in 2010, they also picked up European Championship trophies on either side of their big summer in South Africa. But as the key players from those triumphs begin to retire, Spain finds itself on increasingly shaky ground. The squad heading to Russia is a mix of veterans and talented up-and-comers, and could be just a step away from glory if they can find the right chemistry.
Experienced central defenders Sergio Ramos and Gerard Piqué lead from the back, while wingers Isco and David Silva will be relied on to get creative in the attack. Spain also boasts one of the best goalkeepers in the world, Manchester United shot stopper David de Dea.
