FC Pro Open - Match Week Two Round-Up

Match Week Two of the FC Pro Open  saw the all-Latin American Group B get underway in London. Heading into Monday night's fixtures, much was made of how Brazilian star PHzin would fare as an automatic qualifier for the FC Pro Open.

Much Like Mark11, the 2023 FIFAe Nations Cup champion didn't have to go through the Global Qualifier to feature at the tournament, leaving some to speculate that he might suffer from the same levels of rustiness that appeared to blight the Aussie during Week One.

Round 1

He allayed any fears over his form with a sparkling performance in Round 1, beating none other than Bonanno 5-2 to lay down an early marker. His win over the reigning eLaLiga champion, one of the world's very best, showed from the outset that PHzin was set to be a formidable opponent.

After his first win, PHzin said: "I always play against Bonanno, he's really hard [to play]. It's an amazing start for me, I feel very confident as well."

Regarding his second-half team press, which helped him seal the win in style, he added: "Yeah it is just automatic [for me], I want to win every game I'm in really."

PHzin has made the move to Europe this year after joining Ajax Esports, and while praising the positive impact it had on his game, he also joked: "It's very different for me [here], it's very cold!"

Round 1 also saw Young face off against Argentine FacuCowen, with Happy sitting out of the first round of matches.

A relatively unknown quantity on the elite circuit prior to the FC Pro Open, FacuCowen entered Monday night's games arguably in the richest vein of anyone in Group B - having gone unbeaten in the Global Qualifier.

And yet, things wouldn't go according to plan for him against his Tuzzy Esports teammate in the opening clash of the night.

Young triumphed 6-4 in an entertaining tie, in what was the first sign of just how tight Group B looked set to be.

Young stated after the game: "It was so tough, Facu[Cowen] is one of the best I've played in South America. He's winning all the regional ladders I was playing, but today I won, so that's what matters today!"

"I'm confident, this year is the best for me in [terms of] game-play."

Round 2

Meanwhile, the second round of games saw PHzin extend his red-hot form against fellow Brazilian - and close friend - Young. The Ajax Esports star was at his free-flowing best, pressing Young relentlessly on route to a dominant 6-2 win.

The other second-round match saw Mexican stand-out Happy get his FC Pro Open campaign underway - days after signing for Tuzzy Esports.

He celebrated his transfer with an impressive 3-1 win against FacuCowen, showing that his qualification for the competition was no mere fluke.

Round 3

With Young And Happy both registering big wins in the first two rounds of the night, the pressure was on Man City Esports' Bonanno in his second clash of the night.

Bonanno faced Happy in Round 3, needing a win to properly kick-start his campaign - and to build some momentum. A tight and nervy game ensued, but it was in the second half that the game swung in the Mexican's favour, as he'd score two vital goals to edge ahead 3-1.

A late strike by Bonanno wasn't enough to mount a comeback, and the result left the Argentine rock bottom of Group B after three rounds.

At the very same time, FacuCowen and PHzin played out another classic which went right to the wire.

Heading into the final 10 minutes of the match, FacuCowen looked like he'd done enough to earn a draw, making the game 3-3.

That didn't last long however, as PHzin retook the lead with eight minutes left, only for his opponent to then pop up with an equaliser in the final moments. The levelling goal came courtesy of the 'Thunderstruck' Varane item, which only FacuCowen selected out of the five Group B players.

The draw gave FacuCowen a much-needed lifeline and kept him in the hunt heading into Match Week Two's final couple of rounds.

Round 4

PHzin's last game on Monday night pitted him against Happy, and it's safe to say he ended things on a high. A destructive 7-1 win saw him end Match Week Two in top spot in Group B - with 10 points from four games.

Young, meanwhile, earned his biggest win of the night in Round 4 against a struggling Bonanno, triumphing 6-3 with Kylian Mbappe and Alexis Putellas both getting on the scoresheet for him.

Round 5

The final round of the evening saw the group's two Argentines compete to keep their hopes of reaching the FC Pro Open Finals alive. What promised to be a tight contest beforehand was, in reality, very one-sided, as FacuCowen ran out a 7-1 winner against fellow countryman Bonanno.

That result leaves the Man City star on the brink of elimination, and in need of a miracle when Group B gets back underway in January.

Elsewhere, Young and Happy played out their final games of Match Week Two knowing a win for either of them could be decisive. Both locked on six points each before their clash began, the winner would go into the new year sitting in the all-important second spot in the Group B table.

For 80 minutes, it looked as if Young was heading for a huge win, one which would leave the Brazilians in the top two spots.

That was until Happy clawed a goal back inside the final 10 minutes to make it 4-3 to Young. The Mexican, who made a habit of scoring late and decisive goals in the Global qualifier, couldn't do it again, could he? Well, in the 85th-minute, he once again came up clutch, scoring to make it 4-4 - even having a last-second chance to win the game.

That draw leaves both players on 7 points in the table, although Young's superior goal difference sees him stay in second place.

After the conclusion of his Round 5 match, Happy reflected on his status as an underdog of the group, and how he has taken his game to a new level since last month's Global Qualifier.

He said: "I don't feel like an underdog, I feel I have the levels to compete against them, I'm one of the best players right now.

"I feel I can play against the big dogs, having grown from the Global Qualifer to now."

The rising star also shed some light on what it is like having his dad as his coach while he competes in London: "He is an emotional coach, the tactics [I use] is all him."

The result also suits FacuCowen, who is now just three points behind the pair after four matches.

There were several big winners from tonight's games, including holders of van den Boomen, Willian and Thauvin's  FC Pro Live items.

The 10 points amassed by PHzin see his van den Boomen item get a +2 upgrade (now 88) with alt position and playstyle bonuses also applied.

Both Willian (Young's item) and Thauvin (Happy's item) got +1 upgrades, as well as playstyle and alt position bonuses thanks to the seven points they each earned.
