With just two qualification spots up for grabs, Group D was always going to see some of esports' biggest names fail to qualify for the FC Pro Open Finals.

It was, predictably, coined the 'group of death' before a ball was even kicked, with Tekkz, Fouma, Levi de Weerd, The1OS and Obrun all competing in Match Week 4.

One of the first games on Monday night (December 19) was Levi de Weerd v Tekkz, which presented an opportunity for two of Group D's big hitters to lay down an early marker.

However, the clash was tinged with even more meaning for the Dutchman, as Tekkz had beaten him 2-1 just a month earlier in the FC Pro Open Global Qualifier.

So, would it be a repeat or revenge?

Another close contest ensued, with the pair level at 2-2 heading into the final 30 minutes. But this time, de Weerd had the last laugh, scoring two late goals to secure a vital 4-2 win.

Speaking after the Round 1 match, de Weerd was complimentary of his rival - while also admitting that revenge had been on his mind since his 2-1 Swiss Stage defeat.

The Team Gullit star said: "[I feel] good obviously. He [Tekkz] also beat me in the Swiss Stage, so now was time for revenge I think!

"But it's still three points, still a very long way [to go].

"Tekkz is one of the best, some would say the best player in the world, to beat him obviously feels good."

From there, de Weerd would suffer his only defeat of the night against Obrun, but not one to dwell on a setback for too long, he bounced back in Round 4 to close out a clinical 1-0 victory over Fouma.

This was followed up by a 4-0 win against The1OS, meaning the Dutch star is the only player in the FC Pro Open so far to register back-to-back clean sheets.

Levi has already garnered a reputation as one of the best defensive players in the world, something which was reemphasised by Fouma on Monday night.

The Lorient player stated: "Every time I play against him [de Weerd] he's the best in defence."

At the end of Match Week 4, de Weerd leads the way in Group D, with a more than respectable 9 points to his name from four games.

Reflecting on his night's work, the 19-year-old said: "If you told me at the start of the day I would have [nine points] I would have signed for it!

"I'm happy with nine points. Still, when I look back, the game against Obrun, I could have won it, I just should have held back for a draw probably."

Fortunately for Levi, he has the chance to avenge another defeat when Group D gets back underway in the new year.
